On July 2, 2016, I sent an email to Lee Ann Fox that began, “You were saying the other day that you would probably use a coworking space. Want to start one?” Thus began a journey that culminated with the opening of WorkPlace Sonora on Monday, May 15, 2017.
WorkPlace Sonora is a hub for independent workers in downtown Sonora. Why a hub? Most independent workers (freelancers, business professionals, writers, artists, teachers, volunteer groups, etc.) enjoy working for themselves but many don’t like working alone. WorkPlace Sonora is a place to engage with like minded professionals, collaborate and network with other independent workers, and get work done in a relaxed and supportive environment. We aim to be the community of coworkers that you enjoy coming to work with, whether you are there every day or just dropping in a couple of times a month.
Over the past 10 months, I’ve learned a lot about the creation of a physical business, as opposed to a virtual one. An online product like a website appeals mainly through vision; images and words on a screen. But for a real place to “feel” right, it must appeal to all of the senses. In building WorkPlace Sonora, we’ve worked hard to create a space where people will want to come together to do productive work. From the desk and chair selection, to the quality of the lighting, to the heating and cooling, we think we’ve made a good start. Next, our members will help us with the fine tuning.
If you or anyone you know is an Tuolumne County independent worker, I invite you to find out more about becoming part of our Coworking Community. Our goal is to provide for these common workplace needs: A professional and attractive environment with a fast internet connection, comfortable chair and desk, printer, a place to meet with clients and great, local coffee. Memberships are available from 2 days a month to full time. Non-member day passes are also available. I’m embarrassed to say that the website is not quite ready yet but there is lots of information on the WorkPlace Sonora Facebook page.
And in case you’re wondering, Webdancers will continue to provide website and other online services as before, using WorkPlace Sonora as a home base. I’m excited to begin this new venture and look forward to working together with new colleagues, in service to the larger business community.
