After many months of planning and effort, our APEX expansion is officially ready for members. It features five deluxe workstations, one private office, a phone booth and kitchen area. A lot of effort has gone into making it into a space that is a pleasure to work in, meeting the needs of current and future members.
Ever since WorkPlace Sonora opened in May of 2017, we had our eye on expanding into the back part of the building. We consistently heard from people who wanted full time, reserved desks and more private space. Our original plan was to build walls and create multiple private offices but as we developed that idea further, it became clear that it was not the best use of the space. We began looking at partition options that could create the kind of privacy that people were looking for. We looked at everything from old dividers at county surplus to futuristic pods that cost a fortune and frankly, just looked weird.
Luckily, in what can best be described as a chance encounter, we met Carol Serafini, of Interior Harmony, who resells office systems furniture. She set us up with the flexible, high quality workstations that are in the APEX today. Thanks also go to our contractor, Chris Oakes, of CEO Construction, who installed the beautiful flooring and suffered through our endless indecision about the construction of the two person phone booth. In the end, it came out great.
The space wouldn’t exist at all if it wasn’t for our members. They gave us valuable feedback, helped with construction, brought in decorations, paid their membership fees and generally supported the entire effort. Thank you to all, you know who you are.
Now we can get on with the business of supporting independent workers in Tuolumne County and the surrounding areas. There are more programs that we plan to introduce that will bring new ways of working to our community – and we now have a brand new space to add to the mix.
